I used to be a pretty good writer. Last year I had to write a term paper for my MBA and found it to be a tremendous challenge. It was as if my writing muscle had atrophied from years of sitting around. Eventually I got up to speed but there was a long awkward period that I hated.
Ever since then I wanted to challenge myself to write something every day.
Then last night I read this from Phillip Greenspun, founder of ArsTechnica, in the book Founders At Work [add link]:
People don’t like to write. It’s hard. The people who were really good software engineers were usually great writers; they had tremendous ability to organize their thoughts and communicate. The people who were sort of average-quality programmers and had trouble thinking about the larger picture were the ones who couldn’t write.
I was pretty amazed by this Greenspun dude, and this made me sit upright. It resonated.
I have written some good stuff in the past, and I want an opportunity to practice more.
So this is a blog to do that. Hopefully somebody else gets something out of it along the way.
